Additional Details

– 50 total prize packages is estimated based on an average of 35 participants (i.e. 5 prize packages) per satellite. Actual number of packages could be higher or lower, depending on total number of participants.
– When a player wins a second package, it is considered a “guest/+1” of their first package. The person they give the package to must accompany them when they check-in to the expo and each tournament.
– Players who have already won two packages can still play in a tournament and earn WPPR points, but will be ineligible for prizes. If they qualify for a prize, the prize will go to next highest finishing position.
– Rebuy in the Main Tournament is $20; players cannot use an entry won in a satellite tournament for a rebuy.
– A person can win the T-shirt prize for first only once. If winner of a tournament wins a second time, the T-shirt gets awarded to next highest finisher who has yet to win a T-shirt.
– The Rookie and Women awards are only offered if the person winning the package is eligible. These awards are not included in a second prize package won by an individual, and thus not part of a package used by a “guest/+1”
– At NWPAS, a “Rookie” is considered a player with an IFPA ranking of 2000 or below, or unranked by the IFPA.
– The Cross-Doubles format requires two-player teams. To keep teams balanced, top players in the area should team up with new or novice players. Intermediate players team up with each other. To enforce this, any two players can team up as long as the sum of their IFPA rankings is 3000 or greater, based on rankings the day of the event.
– There are no cash prizes in these events. All entry fees are used towards the cost of acquiring the tournament packages.
– Tournament prize packages that are not claimed at the show are forfeited.
– Packages are not transferable, with exception that a winner of two packages can transfer the second one to their “guest/+1”.

Pinball Seattle Combat Details - March 30, 2015 - 8:30pm - Add-a-Ball

Add-a-Ball Amusements
Entry Fee: $10 per player
Register by 8:30pm
Open to all 21+ Players (don't have to be a current Pinball Seattle league member)

Hey Pinball Seattle Players! In our first NWPAS Satellite Tournament, we're trying something radically new.

Rather than a standard Monday league night, Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show (NWPAS) is sponsoring a special tournament that overlays both an Individual Satellite Tournament and a Pinball Seattle All-Team Tournament, with all 12 teams pitted against one another in a single location.

For the individual tournament, one in seven players will win an NWPAS Tournament Package that includes weekend pass to 2015 NWPAS ($65 value) AND Main tournament entry ($20 value) AND Classic tournament entry ($20 value) AND if a lady then entry into the Babes in Pinland Tournament ($10 value) AND if ranked 2000 or lower, an entry into the Rookie tournament ($5 value). Winner of the individual event will also win a 2015 NWPAS T-shirt (to be picked up at show).

For the team tournament, there will be prizes for every player on the top two teams. Every point earned by a player during the event gets added to not only their individual total, but to their team's total for the night. The more players you have (up to 10), the more points you can earn! The team with highest total wins the team competition.

We'll also have additional prizes for each player on the most cheerful team that doesn't finish in top 2!

Each player will play five 3 or 4-player games against different opponents on five different machines. Anyone not currently on a Pinball Seattle team is welcome to participate; for the teams portion of this event, we'll consider you a sub on a team that could most use additional players. If that team wins a prize, you win a team prize too.

The winning team will get the opportunity to design their own poster, with their barcade name and logo, team logo (if any), team name, and names of their players, and list "Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show - Pinball Seattle Combat - 2015 Team Tournament Champions". We'll print up posters from that design for every player of the team, plus a poster for the barcade to hang up ... similar in concept to the banners that sports teams put up in their stadium when they win a championship!

Players on winning team and second place team will win an NWPAS T-shirt (from a prior year) for each present player on that team. Every player part of the "Most Cheerful Team" will win a Collector's Limited Edition NWPAS Poster from a prior year's event, signed by the pinball artist who created the poster.

This is a first-of-its-kind event that is sure to be a blast for everyone!

Registration opens at 8:00, closes by 8:30pm. We need 15 minutes to generate the schedule for the tournament then we'll start with announcements at 8:45pm and start play by 9:00pm. If you're running late, please ask a friend to sign you up before 8:30pm.

Capitol Hill Challenge Details - Tuesday April 7, 2015 - 8:30pm - John John's Gameroom

1351 E Olive Way
Seattle, WA 98122

We're running a special edition of John John's Gameroom's weekly Tuesday tournament. There will be a cap of 42 players, due to limited number of machines. If the tournament is full, this equates to 6 tournament prize packages available to win, with each having a value of at least $105.

This is a 3-strike knockout tournament with one revision: when there are less players remaining than there are prizes, there will not be any more rounds. At that point, the player with the least number of strikes will be declared winner. If there is a tie, either for first or for the last spot with a prize, there will be a ONE-BALL tie-breaker among the tied players, on a machine selected by tournament director. The winner receives a 2015 NWPAS T-Shirt in addition to the tournament prize package.

We'll also have more raffle prizes, with anyone playing automatically entered! Entry fee is $10, registration opens at 8:00pm, closes at 8:30pm or when registration is full. Registration is first-come-first-serve.

Renton Rumble Details - Sunday April 12, 2015 - 2:00pm - 8-Bit Arcade Bar - ALL AGES

916 S 3rd St
Renton, WA 98057

This is the first of our all-ages events. We're running a special edition of 8-Bit's Second-Sunday-of-the-month Tournament. Registration opens at 1:30pm, closes at 2pm. Play begins shortly thereafter.

Viking Fights Details - Sunday April 26, 2015 - 4:00pm - Olaf's Bar

Seattle, WA 98107

We're running a special edition of Olaf's Fourth-Sunday-of-the-month tournament.

This tournament will have identical format as John John's event. There will be a cap of 42 players, due to limited number of machines. If the tournament is full, this equates to 7 tournament prize packages available to win, with each having a value of at least $105.

Beltown Brawl - Sunday May 3, 2015 - 3:00pm - Shorty's

2222 2nd Ave
Seattle, WA 98121

We're part of Skill-shot's "first-sunday-of-the-month" tournament, a monthly event series known for introducing new and unique pinball tournament formats. For this NWPAS Satellite Tournament, we're going to do a "Cross-Player Doubles" format. What in the world is that? Well let's explain:

Players sign up as teams of two players. If you don't have a teammate, no worries, we'll hook up pairs of players to form a team. Any two players can form a team, with one constraint. The sum of their IFPA rankings must be 3000 or more. This will ensure well-balanced teams for the competition. This tournament will be limited to the first 30 teams that register. This tournament also requires an even number of teams. If there is an odd number, then unfortunately the last team to sign up will have to be dropped from the competition.

The event will be a 5-game partial round-robin, where each team will play five rounds against five other teams. Each team can earn up to 5 points per game, using the same scoring format that is used in the doubles matches of the Pinball Seattle Monday Night Barcade League. That is, if the two games for your team are 1st and 2nd, win 5-0. If 1st and 3rd, with 4-1. If 1st and 4th, and the other team is thus 2nd and 3rd, the team with the higher combined total wins 3-2.

The twist, is that each player on the team shares each of their team's two games. Get ready for a new kind of team strategy! In each round, the teams start a four-player game. Team A will take games 1 and 4. Team B will take games 2 and 3. On ball 1, one of the players from Team A plays game 1, and the teammate plays game 4. Similarly, one player on Team B plays game 2, the other player plays game 3. On ball 2, players switch. The player on Team A that played game 1, now plays ball 2 of game 4. The player on Team A that played game 4, plays ball 2 on game 1. Similarly the players from Team B switch which players play which game.

When you get to ball 3, each team decides which player will play which of their team's game. This is where the real strategy comes in. If you're ahead in one game, behind in the other, who should play which game? If you're close to multiball on one game, close to extra ball on the other game, who should play which game?

Each team will be allowed to play one extra ball per each of their two games. However, whoever earns the extra ball, the OTHER player on the team will play it.

In case of a 5-ball game, the teams switch off on each of balls 1 through 4, then choose who plays which ball on ball 5.

A common question, why does one team play 1st and 4th, and not 1st and 3rd as done in other doubles formats? That is because it's often viewed as an advantage for a player to play last, by knowing the score they need to beat, and we want to balance that advantage. In this case, because the team chooses who plays which of the team's games, there's a different advantage for the team that goes 1st and 4th, vs the team that goes 2nd and 3rd. The team that goes 2nd and 3rd can decide who plays which game for ball 3 by already knowing the score of one of the other team's games. The team that goes 1st and 4th, on the other hand, needs to decide who plays which game without knowing final score of the other players, but whoever goes last does know the score of both games of the other team. Both teams gain a different advantage!

If a tie-breaker is needed for any reason (for 1st place, or for who gets a tournament prize package), each tied team will play a single game. One of the players on the team plays balls 1 and 3 (and 5 on 5-ball game), other player plays ball 2 (and ball 4 on a 5-ball game), and up to one extra ball. Tied teams are ranked per their finishing score on that one game.

Does this sound confusing? Perhaps. Although based on the tournament director's prior experience with this format, you'll get the hang of it by the second round.

Prizes are just like any other NWPAS satellite tournament, one in seven players wins a prize package. In general, both players on the team will receive a package. However, if there are an odd number of packages, or a resulting odd number because one of the winners is not eligible for a package, then for the team that only wins one package, the player with the lower IFPA ranking will get the package.

We encourage you to come try this team doubles format. It's fun, it's different, and there are lots of prizes to be had, including many raffle prizes that will be drawn at the start of the event. Entry is $10 per player ($20 per team). Registration opens at 2:00pm, closes at 3:00pm with play commencing at shortly after registration closes.

Another Joust - Saturday May 9, 2015 - 2:00pm - Another Castle ALL AGES

23303 WA-99
Edmonds, WA 98026

Match play format, same as the individual portion of Pinball Combat Seattle. Cap of 88 players.

We're going to test out a slightly revised scoring format. Still using the bonus point concept, but adjusted so that the winner of the game is always guaranteed to earn at least one point more than second place.

The revised scoring will be as follows:

3-Player Game: Base points = 6-4-1. Two bonus points are awarded:
– 1st player earns bonus point if score[1st] > score[2nd]+score[3rd], else 3rd gets that bonus point.
– 2nd player earns bonus point if score[2nd] > 2 * score[3rd], else 3rd gets that bonus point.
This means 1st gets 6 or 7 points; second gets 4 or 5 points. Third gets 1, 2, or 3 points.

4-Player Game: Base points = 6-4-3-1. Two bonus points are awarded:
– 1st player earns bonus point if score[1st] > score[2nd]+score[3rd], else 3rd gets that bonus point.
– 2nd player earns bonus point if score[2nd] > score[3rd]+score[4th], else 4th gets that bonus point.
This means 1st gets 6 or 7 points; second gets 4 or 5 points. Third gets 3 or 4 points, and 4th gets 1 or 2 points.

2-Player Game: Two-player games will be avoided, but they could happen due to forfeits or certain number of players.
– Winner who does not double opponents score wins 5-3.
– Winner who doubles opponents score, but has less than triple, wins 6-2.
– Winner who triples opponents score, wins 7-1.

Registration opens at 1:30pm, closes at 2:00pm, play to begin at approximately 2:15pm, once the schedule is put together.

Troll Madness - Wednesday May 13, 2015 - 8:30pm - Add-a-Ball Amusements

315 N 36th St #2b
Seattle, WA 98103

BOOSTED PRIZE PACKAGE!! In recognition of Add-a-ball being at the core of the near daily competitive pinball scene in the Seattle area, there will be TWO ADDITIONAL Prize packages (in addition to the one package per seven players that compete), of $110+ value each, that will be awarded to the two highest ranking players who qualify as Rookies (i.e. not ranked in top 2000 per IFPA rankings).

Tournament Director Dave Stewart is also opening up his personal vault of pinball memorabilia, and will throw in a bunch of additional unique raffle prizes to supplement the contributions of NWPAS, that you'll surely want the opportunity to win, in recognition of Add-a-ball being his "Home Turf" in the Pinball Seattle barcade league. GO DEATHSAVERS!!

This will be a 3-Strike knockout, with a cap of 70 players. The tournament will end when number of players remaining is less than the number of prize packages being given out. At that time, the winner of the tournament is player with least strikes. Tie breakers for 1st or for a prize package will play a sudden-death ONE BALL tie-breaker on Medieval Madness! TROLLS!!!!!!!!!

Registration opens at 8:00pm, closes at 8:30pm. Plan is to start with the raffle at about 8:30pm. Late-comers will be accepted until 8:45pm if tournament is not at capacity (and the software cooperates), however they will not be eligible for raffle prizes.

Georgetown Flipoffs - Thursday May 21, 2015 - 8:00pm - Flip Flip Ding Ding - ALL AGES

6012 12th Ave S.
Seattle, WA 98108

This is a 3-strike knockout pinball tournament with one revision: when there are less players remaining than there are prizes, there will not be any more rounds.

BONUS PACKAGES: In addition to one prize package per 7 players, we'll give out TWO ADDITIONAL Prize packages of $110+ value each, that will be awarded to the two highest ranking players who qualify as Rookies (i.e. not ranked in top 2000 per IFPA rankings). Cap of 77 players.

Any kid (12-and-under) that participates will receive a free NWPAS T-shirt.

Registration opens at 7:30pm, closes at 8:00pm. Late-comers will be accepted until 8:15pm (as long as tournament is not full) but will not be eligible for the raffle prizes.

Memorial Day Masters - Monday May 25, 2015 - 1:00pm - 8-bitALL AGES

916 S 3rd St
Renton, WA 98057

PinGolf format with one round of 9 holes, similar to IFPA Pin-Masters event.

Players will be placed together in groups of 2 to 8 players. All players start at 1pm with their group on an assigned starting machine. After the game, players move on to next higher hole (or players on hole 9 move to hole 1).

When a group is 4 or less players, all players play in one game. If 5 to 8 players, then the players will split, with half playing first, then next half second. Order of play for first hole is as shown on sheet. Otherwise, player with least strokes on prior hole goes first. For players tied on a hole, then use the original starting order to decide who goes first.

Every machine will be set to 5-ball play, and will list a target score. Reach the target score in 1 ball for a hole in one. Reach it in 2 balls, then get a score of 2 strokes, and so on. If the target score is not reached after 5 balls, then earn a stroke score of 6 to 10, depending on how close to the target score reached. The score ranges (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% of score) will be shown on a note on the backglass.

Extra balls can be played, and counts as an extension of the current ball being played. Thus if a player earns an extra ball on ball 2, and during that ball 2 they reach the target, they get a score of 2.

When a target score is reached, the player stops playing and informs the scorekeeper of the number of strokes it took them. All subsequent balls for that player will be plunged.

A player who accidentally plays the ball of another player who has not yet reached their score will be disqualified that game for playing out of turn. However, if the player accidentally plays the ball of a player who is done but had not plunged the next ball, then there will be no penalty as long as the player stops playing as soon as anyone notices.

Scores on each machine will be tabulated. Scoresheets should be returned temporarily to the computer desk after every 2 holes so that scores can be added to the live standings. The players are ranked from lowest to highest score, with lowest score being declared winner at the end of the event.

Tie breakers will be held only for 1st place, or if there is a tie for winning one of the prize packages. In the case of a tie, players will play a sudden death playoff, starting at a randomly selected machine. Play for the hole proceeds just like normal round, with players earning a score based on number of balls used to meet the target score. If still a tie, then players move on to the next hole, and repeat until the tie is resolved.

This is a tentative list of the 9 machines that will be used for the round of PinGolf, and an approximate range of where we'll set the target score. Both the set of machines and target ranges are subject to change between now and the tournament. All of these machines will be set to 5-ball play.
Late Update - Lord of the Rings is Out. Superman is In, with target score in range 100,000-150,000.

Registration opens at 12:30pm, closes at 1:00pm, play to begin at approximately 1:15pm, once the groups are put together.

Any kid (12-and-under) that participates will receive a free NWPAS T-shirt.
